Those videos are asked for writing the summary in the class. However, I think those videos are good to be watched for understanding the mind to the skills related to the presentation.
Summary of the videos
Before talking about how to do a good presentation, the right attitude and the strong mind are the nut shell to understand why we should be here writing the summary and training the PhD program with the presentation skill. Based on the talk- The Discipline of Finishing from Conor Neil, he delivered an important idea the worth to be memorized all the time- who would you bet on from surroundings? If you were an investor, would you spend 10% of your wealth to the person who exactly like you?
The speaker quotes the three most important rules that Warren Buffett, the top three billionaires in the world, do the investment to a company, including integrity, energy, and adaptive intelligence. Integrity comes from the coherence between diary and the values. According to the psychology, the integrity is related to marshmallow test indicates that the children who can control their mind to eat the marshmallow immediately and get the additional one after a moment can be successful in their future life. Energy is for a health body and can take the action without overthinking the action. In other words, we should live like athletes' strong mind, get the life on the present 100% and experience every little piece. Adaptive intelligence leads to avoid the disaster pattern, which can be improved by writing the introspection of daily activities every single day. To sum up, the rule of success is simple, do one step a time, say no to things that is not important to you and do not watch on the marshmallow, which give you the excuse to lose the control.
But how to give a good speech? A speech should deliver the new idea that is worth for sharing or inspiring to the audience and help those audience to understand the new ideas easily. That means delivering one main idea during the 15 minutes speech for audience is full for audience to understand. In addition, delivering the idea in a easy way with good structured and ordered needs daily practicing and the preparing before the speech. During the speech, reading the reaction from the audience can immediately get the feedback if the speech is interesting or boring. Therefore, delivering the idea in an intensity way at the beginning of the speech is essential for showing the interests to the audience that the speaker really can care about the topic and catch the attention from the audience. Thinking about in a bar and try to attend the chat, what is the best way to introduce the idea that trying to share? Raised the question that related to the audience is the third best way. Giving some shock facts that let the audience to rethinking about the world that they live is the second best way. However, the first best way to start a speech is to tell the self-experience in the past that inspiring yourself. Everyone is interested in knowing the story of people behind the stuff that tries to talk about. In my opinion, the last one could be modified when giving the speech in colloquium, tell the story that is related to the phenomena in daily life or at least the interesting phenomena that inspiring the researcher to do the research on the topic.
Except for the abstract concept for giving the speech and the way to catch the attention from the audience, the techniques during the communication with audience could assist audience to imagine the idea. David JP Phillips, who search for science behind how to make a good talk, mentioned several important skills in the total 100 skills for giving a successful speech, such as open body language, functional gesturing, various tone of voice, and the proper pauses. For body language, the closed body language could show the defensive attitude toward audience, which is not proper to deliver the message to others. The lower body also shows the trust to people. For functional gesturing, the gesturing should be correlated to the speaking content. Otherwise, the speaking performance could be wierd. For the voice, the low pace or clam pace of speaking that aware listener to pay more attention to the content, leading to the high concentration from audience, which should be good for highlighting the important ideas. The low voice also shows the anticipation motion for audience to listen carefully for the following content. For the pauses, every masterpiece in art and music all contains empty space, which is exactly that should be added to the speaking. A good puase leads the audience focus on the important ideas that speakers try to deliver. On the other hand, bad pause, such as compromise pauses with meaningless sound, could leads to the weird feeling. In short, the every detailed on the stage, the performance is not only to deliver the message from the sentences, but also deliver the voice tone, body language, the feeling of the presenter giving to the audience.
The last part of the presenting is powerpoint slides, the visible information that can easily catch the eyeballs from audience. One of the fact shows that i 90% of what speaker said will be forgot in 30 seconds, which is the same mechanism that we try to find the seat on the train. There are five must attention concepts for doing a slides. 1) Delivering one message for one slice could let the audience focus on one concept at one time and follow the tempo from speaker. 2) Audience only have limited memory to receive text messages from the slides. Simplify the slides with short texts and images can clear title. 3) Most of us see the largest object at the beginning and the starting to notice the minor objects. Therefore, the most important objects or text in the slide should be the biggest to guide the audience. 4) Using the dark background and different contract content on the slides could control the audience what should be notice at the moment precisely. 5) The maximum number presenting the power point is less than 7 because that is the best method to show deliver the message without additional time to pay attention on the slide.
In summary, a worth spreading and eye-catching idea is not good enough to deliver the message to other people. Giving a speech is one way to deliver the message and should be well prepared before going on the stage. With the mind-training method mentioned at the beginning, practice the speech with the right method makes the perfect performance for delivering the ideas that speaker dedicates to.
